has traditionally been concerned with research and surgical treatment of diseases of the ear, nose and throat. Advances in scientific knowledge, diagnostic capabilities and technology have broadened the scope of this field, which has led to subspecialization.
General otorhinolaryngologists, commonly called ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeons, practice within the total scope of one of the subspecialties: Otology, Facial Surgery, or Head and Neck Oncology. Procedures performed at ESC include: |
Tonsillectomy |
| |
The tonsils serve as agents against infections. However, in some people, particularly in children who have large tonsils, these glands perform less efficiently and can cause frequent throat and ear infections or may obstruct breathing. In these cases, surgery to remove the tonsils is of benefit. |
Adenoidectomy |
| |
The adenoids are two small lumps of tissue that lie on either side and at the very back of the throat, where it meets the back of the nose. Swollen adenoids are often associated with tonsillitis and are usually removed as part of a tonsillectomy. |
Ear Tubes |
| |
Ear tubes are small tubes made out of plastic or metal that are placed into the ear drum to ventilate the middle ear, prevent buildup of fluid, and decrease pressure. |
Laryngoscopy |
| |
During a Laryngoscopy, a physician examines a patient's vocal chords to see if they are functioning normally. |
Septoplasty |
| |
Septoplasty is an operation to correct a deformity of the nasal septum. The usual purpose is to improve nasal breathing, but it may also be performed to allow adequate examination of the inside of the nose. |
Rhinoplasty |
| |
Rhinoplasty is surgery to alter the shape or function of the nose. The more common term for this operation is called a "nose job". |
Tympanoplasty |
| |
A hole in the eardrum may lead to repeated ear infections with pain, discharge and hearing loss. If this is the case, surgery called a Tympanoplasty is recommended to close the perforation and put and end to these infections. |
Stapedectomy |
| |
Stapedectomy is a surgical procedure in which the innermost bone (stapes) of the three bones (the stapes, the incus, and the malleus) of the middle ear is removed, and replaced with a small plastic tube of stainless-steel wire (a prosthesis) to improve the movement of sound to the inner ear. |
Parotidectomy |
| |
Parotidectomy is the removal of the parotid gland, a salivary gland near the ear, usually to eliminate cancerous tumors. |
